The Flea, the Grasshopper, and the Skipjack once wanted to see which of them could jump highest; and they invited the whole world, and whoever else would come, to see the grand sight. And there the three famous jumpers were met together in the room.
Der Floh, der Grashüpfer und die Springgans wollten einmal sehen, wer von ihnen am höchsten springen konnte, und deshalb luden sie alle Welt und wer sonst noch kommen wollte, ein, um der Pracht zuzuschauen. Es waren drei ordentliche Springer, die sich da in der Stube zusammengefunden hatten.
"Yes, I'll give my daughter to him who jumps highest," said the King, "for it would be mean to let these people jump for nothing."
"Der, der am höchsten springt, soll meine Tochter haben" sagte der König, "denn es wäre gar zu kleinlich, wenn diese Personen für nichts und wieder nichts springen sollten."
The Flea stepped out first. He had very pretty manners, and bowed in all directions, for he had young ladies' blood in his veins, and was accustomed to consort only with human beings; and that was of great consequence.
Der Floh kam zuerst daran. Er hatte gute Umgangsformen und grüßte nach allen Seiten, denn er hatte Fräuleinblut in den Adern und war gewohnt, mit Menschen umzugehen, und das macht viel aus.
Then came the Grasshopper: he was certainly much heavier, but he had a good figure, and wore the green uniform that was born with him. This person, moreover, maintained that he belonged to a very old family in the land of Egypt, and that he was highly esteemed there. He had just come from the field, he said, and had been put into a card house three stories high, and all made of picture cards with the figures turned inwards. There were doors and windows in the house, cut in the body of the Queen of Hearts.
Nun kam der Grashüpfer; der war freilich bedeutend dicker, aber er sah trotzdem ganz gut aus und war in einer grünen Uniform, die ihm angeboren war. Außerdem behauptete er, aus sehr alter Familie in Ägypten zu stammen, und er sagte, auch hierzulande sei er hoch geschätzt; denn er sei gerade vom Felde in ein Kartenhaus gesetzt worden, das drei Etagen hätte, die sämtlich aus Kartenblättern zusammengesetzt wären und die bunte Seite nach innen kehrten. Es hätte Türen und Fenster, und zwar wären diese gerade aus der Herzdame herausgeschnitten. "Ich singe so schön," sagte er, "daß sechzehn eingeborene Heimchen, die von klein auf gepfiffen und doch kein Kartenhaus bekommen haben, sich noch dünner geärgert haben, als sie schon waren, als sie mich hörten!"
"I sing so," he said, "that sixteen native crickets who have chirped from their youth up, and have never yet had a card house of their own, would become thinner than they are with envy if they were to hear me."
Alle beide, der Floh und der Grashüpfer, schlugen also gehörig die Trommel für ihren eigenen Wert und bewiesen, daß sie für eine Prinzessin eben recht seien.
Both of them, the Flea and the Grasshopper, took care to announce who they were, and that they considered themselves entitled to marry a Princess.
Die Springgans sagte gar nichts, aber man sagte ihr nach, daß sie umsomehr denke, und als der Hofhund nur an ihr geschnüffelt hatte, stand er dafür ein, daß die Springgans aus guter Familie sein müsse. Der alte Ratsherr, der drei Orden für Stillschweigen bekommen hatte, behauptete, er wisse mit Sicherheit, daß die Gans mit dem zweiten Blick begabt sei, man könne an ihrem Rücken erkennen, ob es einen milden oder strengen Winter gäbe, und das könne man nicht einmal an dem Rücken des Mannes erkennen, der den Kalender schriebe.
The Skipjack said nothing, but it was said of him that he thought all the more; and directly the Yard Dog had smelt at him he was ready to assert that the Skipjack was of good family, and formed from the breastbone of an undoubted goose. The old councillor, who had received three medals for holding his tongue, declared that the Skipjack possessed the gift of prophecy; one could tell by his bones whether there would be a severe winter or a mild one; and that's more than one can always tell from the breastbone of the man who writes the almanac.
"Ja, ich sage gar nichts!" sagte der alte König, "ich gehe ganz still und denke mir mein Teil."
"I shall not say anything more," said the old King. "I only go on quietly, and always think the best."
Nun war der Sprung an der Reihe. Der Floh sprang so hoch, daß es niemand sehen konnte, und da behaupteten alle, daß er gar nicht gesprungen wäre, aber das war elende Verleumdung.
Now they were to take their jump. The Flea sprang so high that no one could see him; and then they asserted that he had not jumped at all. That was very mean. The Grasshopper only sprang half as high, but he sprang straight into the King's face, and the King declared that was horribly rude. The Skipjack stood a long time considering; at last people thought that he could not jump at all.
Der Grashüpfer sprang nur halb so hoch, aber er sprang dem Könige gerade ins Gesicht, und da meinte dieser, das sei unappetitlich.
"I only hope he's not become unwell," said the Yard Dog, and then he smelt at him again.
Die Springgans stand lange still und überlegte, sodaß man zuguterletzt glaubte, daß sie überhaupt nicht springen könne.
"Tap!" he sprang with a little crooked jump just into the lap of the Princess, who sat on a low golden stool.
"Wenn ihr nur nicht übel geworden ist" sagte der Hofhund und beschnüffelte sie wieder: rutsch, da sprang sie mit einem kleinen, schiefen Sprunge der Prinzessin in den Schoß, die auf einem niedrigen goldenen Schemel saß.
Then the King said, "The highest leap was taken by him who jumped up to my daughter; for therein lies the point; but it requires head to achieve that, and the Skipjack has shown that he has a head."
Da sagte der König: "Der höchste Sprung ist der zu meiner Tochter empor, denn dieser Einfall zeugt von höchster Feinheit. Aber es gehört eben Kopf dazu, und den hat die Springgans bewiesen. Sie hat keine Grütze im Kopfe."
And so he had the Princess.
Und da bekam sie die Prinzessin.
"I jumped highest, after all," said the Flea. "But it's all the same. Let her have the goose-bone with its lump of wax and bit of stick. I jumped to the highest; but in this world a body is required if one wishes to be seen."
"Ich sprang doch am höchsten" sagte der Floh, "aber es ist einerlei! Laß sie nur das Gänsegerippe mit Stock und Pechdraht nehmen! Ich sprang doch am höchsten, aber es gehört eben Leibesumfang in dieser Welt dazu, um gesehen zu werden."
And the Flea went into foreign military service, where it is said he was killed.
Und dann ging der Floh in fremden Kriegsdienst, wo er dem Hörensagen nach erschlagen wurde.
The Grasshopper seated himself out in the ditch, and thought and considered how things happened in the world. And he too said, "Body is required! body is required!" And then he sang his own melancholy song, and from that we have gathered this story, which they say is not true, though it's in print.
Der Grashüpfer setzte sich draußen in den Graben und dachte darüber nach, wie ungerecht es eigentlich in der Welt zugehe, und er sagte auch: "Ein Körper gehört dazu. Ein Körper gehört dazu." Und dann sang er sein eigenes, trübseliges Lied weiter, aus dem wir die Geschichte erfuhren, die gut und gern eine Lüge sein könnte, ob sie auch gedruckt dasteht.
